Docker with automatic HTTPS

You need a machine with Docker, ports 80 and 443 open, and a DNS name pointing at it.

cd deploy
cp .env.example .env # set PIECEOFF_DOMAIN=rooms.example.com
docker compose up -d --build
curl https://rooms.example.com/health

Caddy gets and renews the certificate. Players set Server to wss://rooms.example.com/ws in the app.

Good to know

  • Rooms are protected by an 8-character invite code, and failed joins are rate limited per address. Treat it as a place friends meet, not a moderated public service.
  • Defaults: 500 rooms, 400 connections, 16 GiB per media file, 50 GiB media quota, empty rooms deleted after 90 days. All are environment variables.
  • Behind your own proxy, pass WebSocket upgrades on /ws, do not cap request bodies, and keep read timeouts above 60 seconds.
  • Back up the data directory while the server runs. Rooms and their media reappear on restore.

Everything here comes from the project's deployment guide, which stays the source of truth.
